Vision Elements developed a system which allows the interventional cardiologist to sit at a radiation-shielded workstation and navigate stents and guide-wires insertions, with high precision, thus reducing the radiation exposure to the team.
The auto-navigation algorithm tracks the path from the ostium to the lesion while the heart beats, thereby decreasing the need for contrast injection. Also developed was a 3D reconstruction of the path used to estimate the distance to target during wire insertion.
Vessel movement due to heart beats and breathing were the main challenge. Other challenges arose from the fact that cardio X-ray images are very noisy, vessels look alike, cross each other and keep changing their shape.
